Tina Russell is a freelance independent photographer based out of St. Petersburg and Tampa, Fla. She's previously held staff photojournalism jobs at The Penny Hoarder, The Utica Observer-Dispatch and The Villages Daily Sun. She excels in documentary, long-term projects focusing on the human experience. She's an expert at gaining trust with people, which allows her to break down barriers of the people she photographs.
Present and past clients include The Washington Post, Politico, The Wall Street Journal, The Guardian, NBC, The 19th News, Vera Institute of Justice and The Hechinger Report. Non-journalism clients include Tampa General Hospital, Sunshine Health, Florida Humanities and Baby2Baby.
Her photographs revolving around the Word of Life Church murder have appeared in publications nationwide, such as The New York Times, LA Times and Rolling Stone magazine and wire services: AP and Reuters. Those photos won her a "New York News Publisher's Association Distinguished Feature Photography Award of Excellence."
Other awards include NPPA monthly clip contests in the feature singles, photo stories, breaking news and sports categories. She's also received New York State Associated Press Association awards for "Hope for Mackenzie" and "In Loving Memory."
